<hi style=afpcap>The specification for the Utility trainer experimental (UTX) was unusual as the Air Force issued its requirements with no guarantee that it would fund the prototype or issue an order for a production run. Several companies responded, with North American being declared the winner with their T-39 Sabreliner proposal. Although the design was allocated the in the trainer range, the aircraft were primarily used for utility, communications and VIP duties with all the major commands. Tactical Air Command employed six with modified noses to train F-105 aircrew with the designation T-39B. Most Sabreliners were redesignated as CT-39As to signify their transport role.</hi>
